Removing The Mask Of Expectations: Nessa Makara Poetry

“I Am Unable To Be What You Want”

In a world of desires, expectations arise.
where pressures mount towards the guise.
Although, I must say,
“I am unable to be what you want.”
I have tried to mold myself to fit the role.
Although the task of putting on a mask is bold, cold, and heavy, So, I rebelled, breaking free from the shell of the mold of what I was told.
I am not here to please the world’s demands, sacrificing where my dreams expand.
The path of others is not my own.
I will follow the beat of my heart alone.
My journey is to be my true, authentic self, not put away on a shelf.
Embracing my uniqueness is what I am destined to do.
So, I am unable to wear your label, which was put on the unstable table.
My path, I find my might, in the fight of doing what is right,
to explore, to discover, to live, to learn, and to grow.
I will not waver.
I have not come this far to come this far. I will not change; I will only become more of who I am.
So, I must say,
“I am unable to be
what you want.”
