About The Art Movement Suprematism

Abstract Language

Suprematism is a revolutionary abstract visual language that fundamentally changed the way art is viewed. The artistic unexplored style of Suprematism emerged in the years leading up to World War I and gained popularity in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution of 1917. Becoming an essential part of the avant-garde Russian art movement.

The term was founded by the Russian painter Kazimir Malevich, who called this new form of art “the supremacy of pure feeling or non-objective creation.” Through pure abstraction Malevich sought to redefine the purpose of art, to go beyond mere representation and decoration towards higher truth and something more transcendental.

In addition to Malevich, other notable artists associated with the movement include El Lissitzky, Lyubov Popova, and Aleksandr Rodchenko.

Suprematism is characterized by its use of basic geometric shapes, such as squares, circles, and rectangles. Emphasizing fundamental elements such as line, color, and form. Resulting in a minimalist abstract expression of pure feeling. The abstract movement stripped away all representational elements of art, like landscapes or portraits, and instead focused on the power of color, form, and space.

Despite its initial popularity, Suprematism was eventually suppressed by the Soviet government in the late 1920s, as the movement’s abstract forms were seen as a threat to the official state-sanctioned style of Socialist Realism. Nonetheless, the movement had a profound influence on the shape of modern art paving the way for styles like Expressionism and Minimalism. Suprematism gave rise to a completely new way of thinking about art, one that emphasized the emotive and spiritual power of abstraction, and continues to inspire artists to this day.

Ultimately, the deeper ideals of Suprematism aim to transcend earthly limitations and find a spiritual connection with the divine, expressing the universal principles of harmony and unity in an abstract form.

The material body & mind is temporal, but the real man is spiritual and eternal.
